Low Nursing Staff Turnover in Connecticut Homes
Nursing staff leave Connecticut's 191 homes at an average rate of 37.4% a year. That puts the state 48th out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, under the 45.8% figure for the nation. The federal staffing data published by CMS, the federal agency that runs Medicare, show daily staffing levels. In those files, 117 of the 187 Connecticut facilities that reported recorded nurse hours under the expected level. Nursing homes in the state give each resident 3.73 nurse staff hours a day on average. That places them 40th in the nation, lower than the national average of 3.86.
Over the last three inspection cycles, Connecticut homes drew 486 quality-of-care citations, the largest statewide total for any one rule. Next came rules on accident hazards and supervision, with 430 citations. In 143 of them, inspectors found a resident had suffered actual harm or was in immediate danger. Federal regulators fined Marlborough Health & Rehabilitation Center in Marlborough $195,360 in January 2025; since September 2023, that was the largest single penalty in Connecticut.

Speaking With a Connecticut Nursing Home Abuse Lawyer
If a Connecticut nursing home resident is in danger right now, the first step is to call 911. The general state deadline for personal injury claims in Connecticut runs 2 years under Conn., and this applies to families thinking about a legal claim. Gen. Stat. §§ 52-575 et seq.; nursing home and medical claims, however, can carry a different, sometimes shorter deadline. The Department of Public Health is also directed by Conn. Gen. Stat. § 19a-563h to set three hours of daily direct care for each resident as the minimum staffing level for nursing homes. The family can ask a Connecticut attorney to confirm the exact filing dates.
The provider information and health deficiencies files from CMS Care Compare supply the data.
